The group’s emblem, a skull and crossbones etched above the number “322,” has become its most recognizable symbol. Its exact meaning remains a mystery, fueling countless interpretations. Some believe “322” refers to the death of the ancient Greek orator Demosthenes in 322 BCE, symbolizing the end of democracy in Greece—and perhaps a new beginning for something more covert. Each spring, just fifteen Yale seniors are chosen to join Skull and Bones through a secretive process known as “tapping.” The society’s criteria for selection have remained largely hidden from the public eye, but factors such as academic excellence, leadership potential, and familial connections to wealth or political influence are often cited.

Once tapped, the new members—referred to as “Bonesmen”—enter into a tightly bonded brotherhood forged through elaborate and confidential initiation rituals. These take place within the society’s headquarters, a windowless sandstone building ominously known as “The Tomb,” located on Yale’s campus.
