Help with Using Kumander Linux – Tips, Features & Community Experience?

Post by douglasrozek »

Hello everyone,

I'm currently exploring Kumander Linux and would love to hear from anyone with hands-on experience using it. I'm particularly interested in:

How does it perform on older hardware?

What are some unique features or advantages compared to other lightweight Linux distros?

Are there any known compatibility issues or limitations I should be aware of?

Recommended tools or settings for productivity or creative work?

Also, if you've transitioned to Kumander from another OS (like Windows or Ubuntu), how was your experience?

I've been diving into this as part of a broader tech and creative project over on my sites:
👉 https://www.gmru.co.uk/ – covering tech tips, guides, and open-source tools
👉 https://www.bigwritehook.co.uk/ – a platform for creative voices and unique stories

Any help, tips, or shared experiences would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

How does it perform on older hardware?

I am ‘brand new’ to LINUX after using M$ software since 3.1 days. The KUMANDER UI feels good and I am comfortable using it. I would consider myself an advanced user, but not a gamer. I use GOOGLE CHROME extensively for mail, social media, and general browsing, including Youtube, Spotify, etc. I use the office suite (Libre Office) extensively in compatibility mode mostly (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx). I am also a professional photographer with years of experience in Adobe LR and basic PS. I plan to be using RAWTHERAPEE and KdenLive.

My laptop is an HP 250 G6 INTEL Core i3-5005U with 8 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD. I may increase the RAM at some stage, and maybe also the HDD with an SSD.

Performance on this ‘older’ hardware is reasonable and workable, but not lightning fast.

LINUX is still a ‘learning curve and there are still many things I don’t know how to do, or even if it is possible. I have not yet connected other devices like printers, scanners, external drives, or my QNAP NAS. (I tried an external USB NFTS HDD but it is not compatible. I am looking for a way to do that...)

I understand that my workflow will have to change, e.g. downloading images from my cameras, the way I run my digital asset management strategy, etc. I hope it will be possible and that I can adjust.

What are some unique features or advantages compared to other lightweight Linux distros?

I have no experience and cannot comment on this question.

Are there any known compatibility issues or limitations I should be aware of?

I am struggling with connecting to my QNAP NAS device, but most likely due to lack of knowledge. I will still seek expert assistance.

Recommended tools or settings for productivity or creative work?

As commented above. Limited access to both RAWTHERAPEE and KdenLive seems good. I also like AUDACITY ; used it extensively in Windows environment.

Also, if you've transitioned to Kumander from another OS (like Windows or Ubuntu), how was your experience?

The installation of KUMANDER was easy and simple. I had a try with UBUNTU, but I was not comfortable with the UI. I tried MINT in a VM on my Windows desktop and liked it, but I could not get it installed on this HP laptop I use for KUMANDER. The only problem I had with the KUMANDER installation was that I had to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS.

The are a few ‘irritations’ in KUMANDER which I will investigate and if I can’t fix them or disable them I may comment later.
